Performing Arts

Our Drama/Performing Arts department in Pontypridd High School creates a nurturing, creative space for learners to develop a wide range of transferable skills. We strive to provide learners with the opportunities to expressive their creative abilities in and outside of the classroom and use this confidence to achieve their full potential.

Throughout Year 7 & 8 we explore different elements including pantomimes, musical theatre, script writing, duologue, comedy and advertising. Throughout these elements learners will develop skills such as facial expressions, gestures, movement, blocking, vocal projection and diction and posture. Also allowing pupils to explore the use of props, costume, sound and lighting.

The Year 9 Performing Arts GCSE option is the BTEC Level 2 Award in Performing Arts which is designed for students who have a genuine interest in the Performing Arts industry along with an aptitude for singing, dance, and acting. This course allows learners to develop a realistic understanding of job roles within the industry through applying and auditioning for prospective roles. Perform in a variety of contexts, both individually and a group. Develop their performance skills, creativity skills, directing skills and confidence.

Our extra-curricular programme allows pupils to extend and consolidate their skills through our Whole School Musical. Recent school musicals have included Grease, Hairspray, High School Musical and our July 2024 musical Matilda.
