Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Week ​​​​​​​

STEM week celebrates careers and studies in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).   During Pontypridd High School STEM week pupils in year 7 and 8 will be provided a week of hands on practical STEM experiences

 Year 7

Year 7 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be participating in the Bright Ideas Challenge project- this aims to inspire young people about the positive role STEM skills play in society and to encourage students to become the engineers and scientists of tomorrow. Students will be given a design brief based around ‘Energy’ and during the week in teams will look to designing a solution to their brief.  Alongside this they will take part in 3 practical ‘Energy’ tasks with outsider providers EESW who will provide hands design and challenge sessions.  To end the week the students will present their findings in the PHS Big Bang Fayre where the CEO of EESW will select the winning design.

Year 7 and 8

Tuesday and Thursday during STEM week will involve year 7 and 8 taking part in a wide range of hands on practical STEM activities. This will encourage pupils to work as team, develop problem solving skills and communication skills.

Also during the week the following two trips being promoted

Aerospace- Bristol

  • Tuesday 23rd October
  • Hundreds of engaging interactive exhibits
  • Exciting hands on activities
  • Leave school at 8am
  • Arrive back approximately 4:15pm

 

The Royal Mint

  • Thursday 25th October
  • Experience the sights, sounds and smells of thousands of glistening new coins, hot off the press.
  • Interactive exhibition.
  • See where the London 2012 Olympic medals were made.
