Work Placements

At Pontypridd High School, we are always looking for openings to further develop our pupils’ skills and practices.

Throughout 2014 to 2015, pupils in KS4 have been fortunate enough to be involved in Pupil Work Placements in the Pontypridd locality. Following interviews with Ian Broad, our Pupil Liaison Officer at the school, suitable placements connected to the pupils’ career choices were chosen and organised. Placement times have varied from 1 day per week over several months to 2 days a week over several weeks. The pupils experienced opportunities in hairdressing, painting and decorating, mechanics, recycling and grounds maintenance in Pontypridd Park – to name just a few. They were given opportunities to develop their life skills and confidence. All feedback has been positive from the work placement tutors.

“*** has been so positive in all her efforts. She has progressed well and gained so much in confidence. Hairdressing is a definite career choice for her.”  Pam Wilson Hairdressing Tutor, Coleg Y Cymoedd, Nantgarw.

“I am so glad to hear that this is having such a positive result on the boys. They have acted in a positive manner and the reports I have received and when I have spoken to them it has been very positive.” Geraint Jenkins, Area Parks Manager, Taf.

All of the pupils who have undergone placements were awarded a special certificate that was included in their Record of Achievement folder in their Leavers’ Celebration Assembly on Thursday 14th May. Some of the pupils are pictured here with their certificates. From L to R:

Brandon Wensley; Taryn Williams; Jordan Gay, Zoe Williams and Alex Shephard.

They are all now much more confident to be able to understand and discuss what goes on in the real world of work as they have appreciated it first hand for a sustained length of time. For many it has definitely confirmed their career choices too.

At Pontypridd High School, we are always looking for openings to further develop our pupils’ skills and practices. If anyone feels they may be able to offer any of our pupils such a worthwhile experience, please do not hesitate to contact Ian Broad at the school on 01443 486133 or by email: broadi@pontyhigh.co.uk
