Rachel Ward, the author of ‘Numbers,’ came to Pontypridd High School on Wednesday 27th February to promote the love of reading. Rachel Ward is our patron of reading, she was here today to help Mrs Van-Baaren’s sixth form class with reading competitions and developing links through blogging.
During her visit she discussed her award-winning novel ‘Numbers’ and how the publication process works. She showed the manuscript of one of her novels, and explained how artwork for the front cover of novels is developed. We learned about how reading has changed her life. It was a very inspiring workshop! |

This month our congratulations go to three pupils, Atantis Snowden of 7P, Courtney-Jay Robinson of 7Y and Ffion Richards of 7I. They have been chosen because of their positive attitudes and their hard work and commitment to learning. They all created a fantastic magazine which really impressed their teachers. Keep up the brilliant work girls.

Students at Pontypridd High School are currently gathering information in order to make a film about the mining disaster of 1894 which happened here on the school site, formerly the Albion Colliery.
They are working with Justyn Jones from Small World Productions who is co-ordinating the project as part of our E3 extra-curricular programme here at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Filming has already begun in school where the team have interviewed local people who have relatives that were in the disaster and have had stories passed down through the generations. They have also interviewed the Curator from the local History Museum in Pontypridd.
On Tuesday afternoon the pupils visited Big Pit in Blaenavon where they were able to put some film footage together, interview miners who have worked underground and do some valuable historical research into mining and events that possibly led up to the disaster.
If any pupils would like to take part in the project whether it is historical research, media work or acting for the film, please pop along to the E3 Office. |

It has been brought to our attention that certain social network areas have been set up where individuals can anonymously post remarks concerning members of our school community.
These sites are not unique to us and we have no means of managing them . The content concerns us as a school and we would like to advise you that the only way of getting these pages offline is to report them to the company. The school has reported one and has managed to get it taken offline.
We would like to encourage parents/guardians to monitor your child's activity whilst online and report any worries you have to the company concerned. |

On Saturday 20th April 2013 Kyle Adams a pupil at Pontypridd High School will join some famous names like Gold medal winner Paralympic cyclist Mark Colbourne, Paralympic swimmer David Roberts CBE and ex Wales rugby international Alix Popham on the Battle 2 Brive. In 1997 rugby teams Brive and Pontypridd were involved in a heated encounter during a Heineken Cup match, which become known as the infamous Battle of Brive. Mencap Cymru are reconnecting the two towns by organising a gruelling charity cycle ride from Pontypridd to Brive in the south of France. Hopefully this will be a quieter test of skill and stamina that will end in Kyle and the other cyclists watching the last Brive match of the season on Saturday 27th April 2013.
To help him raise as much money as possible Pontypridd High School is going to offer the pupils, in all year groups, the chance to go for an accompanied cycle ride during their PE lessons on MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY of next week. We will charge them £1.50 for the ride.
On Monday 25th Feb and Monday 4th March, the Rhys Cycle team along with Mr Thomas will be taking 20+ pupils (and staff) for a longer bike ride after school. This will need a bigger donation by each rider – perhaps £5-10!!

Confused about your child’s report? If so, come along to PHS on Thursday 21st Feb between 6pm and 7pm to have your questions answered. Pupils from Year 7 and 8, along with their parents, are invited to an evening at school where we will do a presentation about the new school reporting system. We will explain all the new reporting codes such as H, M, I and C and the academic achievement numbers 1 to 5. Parents will also get an opportunity to ask questions about their child’s reports to Mrs Finney and Miss Lauchlan the Standards Managers for KS3. Refreshments will be available.

Five Year 9 pupils Ben Gooding, Dewi Jones, Daniel Shoemark, Iona Davies and Katie Thomas attended Glamorgan University last weekend to extend their knowledge in Mathematics. The University are offering these five pupils a KS3 Mathematics Master Class for 8 weeks every Saturday morning with the aim to introduce young people to topics they do not normally meet in the classroom. The work does not depend heavily on previous knowledge learnt in school but it is intellectually demanding and the classes therefore require a considerable commitment by all pupils.
