A huge congratulations to Ciara Richards, a year 8 pupil at Pontypridd High School, who won the French Open Squash Championships under 13 category (girls) at Lille in France last month.
Ciara seeded 5/8 played six matches to get to the final and in the semi-finals took out two Egyptian girls 3-0. She played some top squash to reach her first Super Series Final.
Ciara is only the third welsh winner of the French Junior Open even though it was her first time to compete in it.
Well done! |

On 13th March 2013, 10 pupils in Year 11 visited Bridgend Magistrates Court of Law with Mrs Samuel-Jones. We were greeted by Mr Barry Stephens JP who had very kindly organised the day for us. During the visit we observed a variety of hearings and got an insight into the prosecution system. We got to meet other magistrates, solicitors, ushers and probation officers. We attended an adult criminal court (all people 18+) and observed many interesting cases (including some video links directly to prisons). Some were very intriguing and we had the opportunity to observe some scenarios and decide what punishment we felt would be appropriate for the crimes allegedly committed.
All of us who attended were very grateful for the opportunity with many of us showing an interest in pursuing a career in law. Everyone we met on the day was very informative and willing to answer any questions we posed. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Barry Stephens JP and Mr Morgan (Clerk to the Court) for making our day so enjoyable and worthwhile. |

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Angelica Witt who sadly passed away over the weekend. Angelica was extremely popular with staff and her peers. She was a kind-hearted, caring and selfless young lady whose untimely death has deeply shocked and saddened the school and the local community. "Angelica, you made a great impact at Pontypridd High School and we'll always remember you."

On Sunday evening, February 24th, Menna Preedy made her first West End performance on stage at Her Majesty's Theatre in Haymarket, London's West End.
Menna is a member of Fame Factory which is based in Caerphilly. A few children from each of the four centres of The Theatre School in Wales were involved in a children's variety show called "Bobby Dazzlers." Ten other acts from different parts of the country took part in the show.
The group performed "When I grow up" from Matilda and also finished off the show with a Glee Club medley including well known hits like "Edge of Glory."
It was an amazing experience for everyone who took part. Well done Menna! |

A raising awareness event about safety on the school buses was held this morning in school. The event was organised by the School Council who put together a short film to inform pupils about the consequences of poor behaviour on the buses. They also invited Gwyneth Elliot, Senior Principal Transport Officer, who gave a presentation and Bob Young, one of the drivers from Creigiau Travel, who was on hand to give advice to the pupils about any concerns they might have.
It is vitally important that good behaviour and respect are shown during the bus journey to and from school and we urge you to think about the consequences to everyone should an incident occur.
Thank you

The Staff at Pontypridd High School celebrated World Book Week in style yesterday. It was hard to ignore the fact that PHS encourages the love of reading when the pupils were being taught by a lookalike character from favourite books such as Harry Potter.
It has been an action packed week with lots of literacy activities in and out of lessons such as a book swap in the lunch time where pupils could exchange books or even purchase books at a reduced cost, a visit from an established author and lots more.
Thank you to Mrs Van Baaren, our Literacy Co-Ordinator and English Teacher, for organising such a wonderful week of fun and excitement. |
